Astronomers find the youngest planet yet: Elias 2-24 b
Demo article · summary written for the integration demo
Illustration
Astronomers have confirmed a planet that is less than a million years old, the youngest known so far. Elias 2-24 b orbits a young star about 450 light-years from Earth and is still gathering gas from the disk around it.
The planet is about as massive as Jupiter. The previous record holders — two planets around PDS 70 and two around WISPIT 2 — are all more than 5 million years old.
The find gives astronomers a rare chance to watch a planet while it is still forming.
